When Nicole imagined her future as a Deaf nurse, working in her small hometown never felt possible. Access to ASL interpreters was limited, and the idea of providing safe, confident care without that support seemed out of reach.
Everything changed when she was partnered with her Hearing Assistance Dog, Freya.
With Freya by her side—alerting to door knocks, ringing phones, her name, and even fire alarms—Nicole began to feel a new sense of independence. Everyday moments grew easier. Her world felt more connected. And possibilities that once felt impossible began to open.
Three years later, Nicole made a life-changing decision: she returned to her hometown to become the middle school nurse.
The move was intimidating at first, but Freya’s reliable alerts and steady presence gave her the confidence to take the leap.
“I was nervous for the transition, but Freya alerts me so reliably to sounds in my environment that I knew we could do it,” said Nicole.
Today, Freya is a beloved member of the school community. Students greet her each morning with enthusiastic waves, and her tail wags right back. She joins in on spirit-week costumes, comforts stressed-out students, and even has her own school ID badge. At home, she helps Nicole keep a consistent routine—waking her up on time for school and nudging her at bedtime.
Most importantly, Freya has given Nicole the freedom to live where she feels rooted and supported. “Without Freya, I wouldn’t have been able to move back to my hometown,” Nicole says.
“I am so grateful the opportunity she’s given me to reconnect with my roots and the joy she brings daily. We’ve been together for 3 years now, and every day is a gift.”
Freya didn’t just help Nicole return home—she helped her step confidently into a role she loves, surrounded by the community that shaped her.
