Dogs for Better Lives (DBL) is pleased to announce the appointment of Michael Pearis as President and Chief Executive Officer.

Pearis brings extensive executive leadership experience, focused on guiding mission-driven organizations through strategic leadership, team building, and financial stewardship. Most recently, he served as Chief Executive Officer of The Groden Network, an organization with more than 500 employees across 26 locations serving individuals with autism and other intellectual and developmental disabilities. Previously, he held executive leadership roles with Wediko Children’s Services and The Home for Little Wanderers.

Following an extensive nationwide search, the Board of Directors selected Pearis to lead the organization into its next era of service and impact. At Dogs for Better Lives, Pearis joins an experienced leadership team, dedicated staff, committed volunteers, and generous supporters who have helped shape the organization’s success for nearly five decades. Together, they will continue increasing access to professionally trained Assistance Dogs.

“We are thrilled to welcome Michael Pearis as the next CEO of Dogs for Better Lives,” said Board Chair CarrieJo Hoelzel. “Throughout this process, our goal was to find a leader who could build on DBL’s strong foundation, support our dedicated team, and advance our mission of transforming lives through professionally trained Assistance Dogs. We are excited about the experience and leadership Michael brings to the organization and look forward to the impact we will continue to make together.”

“I am honored to join Dogs for Better Lives and become part of an organization with such an extraordinary history and mission,” said Pearis. “What stands out most to me is the community behind this work: the staff, volunteers, puppy raisers, donors, and supporters whose dedication makes every placement possible. Having spent much of my career serving children, adults, and families facing social, emotional, and developmental challenges, I have seen firsthand the transformative power of the right support at the right time.” Pearis said.

He also brings a personal connection to this role. “My family’s own experience, including raising an autistic son, has only deepened my appreciation for organizations that help people live more independently and confidently. I look forward to listening, learning, and working alongside this community as we build on DBL’s remarkable legacy and expand its impact in the years ahead,” shared Pearis.

As CEO, Pearis will work closely with DBL’s leadership team and Board of Directors to advance strategic priorities, ensure long-term sustainability, and support the people, programs, and partnerships that make the organization’s work possible.

Since 1977, Dogs for Better Lives has transformed lives through professionally trained Assistance Dogs, including Autism Assistance Dogs, Hearing Assistance Dogs, and Facility Dogs. Through these partnerships, individuals gain greater independence and confidence, while schools, healthcare providers, and community organizations benefit from the meaningful support Assistance Dogs provide.
