In the Chicago metro area, a special four-legged therapist is making a quiet but profound impact. Facility Dog Cliff has recently begun working with mental health therapist Stephanie, bringing his calm, gentle demeanor into her therapy sessions. From the moment they met, it was clear that Cliff was more than just a dog—he was a partner in healing. By performing tasks like “settle,” “visit,” “lap,” and “squish,” Cliff creates a soothing environment in Stephanie’s sessions, helping clients feel safe and supported as they navigate their emotional journeys.
Finding the Right Fit
Cliff was donated to DBL from Guide Dogs for the Blind. Although he wasn’t a fit for guide dog work, his trainer at DBL, Claudia, was determined to find his perfect working career. Through persistent training and plenty of curve balls, it became evident that Cliff was destined to be a Facility Dog. In June 2024, after demonstrating his obedience and ability to perform key tasks—such as settle, visit, lap, and squish—Cliff graduated with flying colors. Though initially nervous around children, spending time in weekend foster care helped Cliff acclimate, and now he adores being around kids.
A New Beginning with Stephanie
When Stephanie received the news that Cliff would be placed with her, she was both thrilled and nervous. “I was initially shocked and ecstatic,” she recalls. “Then I got really nervous and wondered if I was really ready for him. I was expecting to be on the waitlist for at least 1-2 years.”
That excitement turned to joy when she met Cliff for the first time, describing how he immediately explored his new home while she couldn’t stop petting him.
Stephanie applied for a Facility Dog with the hope that an animal companion could enhance her therapy sessions.
“There is just so much benefit to having an animal in the therapy session,” she says.
Already, Cliff has made a profound impact on both her and her clients. “He brings a smile to everyone’s face. It’s amazing how quickly some individuals begin to feel more comfortable in the room while he’s been with me.”
Transforming Therapy Sessions
Stephanie is most excited to see how Cliff will change the dynamic in her therapy sessions. His presence not only creates a calming environment but also motivates clients to engage in exposure work outside of the office. Whether it’s through his comforting presence or the tasks he’s trained to perform, Cliff is helping clients feel more at ease and supported during their sessions.
A Grateful Heart
Reflecting on the role of puppy raisers in making Cliff’s journey possible, Stephanie expressed her gratitude:
“A huge thank you for all the time and work that goes into raising service animals. So many people are able to benefit from the work that they do.”
Cliff’s story is a testament to the life-changing impact of Facility Dogs and the dedication of the trainers, puppy raisers, and staff who support them along the way. We can’t wait to see the incredible work Cliff and Stephanie will do together in the years to come.
