When Tulip, a two-year-old Black Lab with a constellation of unique white spots, trots into a school, she isn’t just arriving to work—she’s showing up to make the school day a bit better for everyone. As a Facility Dog trained by Dogs for Better Lives, Tulip brings her expert skills and calm demeanor to Darci’s work at Grants Pass School District, where together they help students on the autism spectrum navigate their challenges and shine.
Tulip’s journey to becoming Darci’s partner began long before January 2024, when she officially joined Darci. From her days with devoted Puppy Raisers to her rigorous training with DBL, Tulip was prepared for her role in bringing hope and healing to children. And for Darci, who serves as an Autism Consultant with the school district, having Tulip by her side has brought new depth to her work.
“Building relationships is essential to my work,” Darci said. “I’ve noticed that having Tulip by my side appears to foster more interest in my presence in the classroom; students approach me and begin making requests and comments with much more ease now that Tulip is with me.”
Tulip’s Magical Tasks
Tulip’s expertly trained skills, including light pressure tasks like “settle” and “squish,” help students regulate their emotions and focus on learning. Darci vividly remembers how these skills created a breakthrough for one student:
“A classroom teacher shared that a student on my caseload arrived at school very dysregulated. She told the parent, ‘Don’t worry, it’s Tulip Tuesday, Tulip will help him regulate in no time!’ Sure enough, after 10 minutes with Tulip performing co-regulation tasks and applying moderate pressure, the student transitioned to reading, ready to learn,” recalled Darci.
But it’s not just the students who benefit. Darci was pleasantly surprised by the impact Tulip has had on her colleagues. “Most educators carry a lot of stress,” she said. “So whether it’s her calming presence lying at their feet under the table or the light pressure of her head resting on their lap, Tulip’s attendance in meetings and trainings is much appreciated. Believe me when I say, she’s a star when she walks onto campus!”
Fostering Connection
For students who struggle with social interactions, Tulip acts as a bridge, helping them connect with peers and build confidence.
“I’ve noticed that Tulip’s presence facilitates new social connections,” Darci explained. “My students feel pride and ownership over Tulip and enjoy sharing information about her with their peers.”
Even non-speaking students or those using alternative communication methods experience breakthroughs. Darci has integrated Tulip’s tasks into communication tools, making interactions more engaging and motivating. “I’ve noticed an increase in their interest and perseverance in communicating, especially regarding Tulip and her skills, tricks, and life outside of work,” she said.
Making it Possible
Reflecting on her experience, Darci is profoundly grateful for the Puppy Raisers and trainers who laid the foundation for Tulip’s success. “I’m so grateful for the Puppy Raisers and trainers who share their love and time with our future Service Dogs. Without them, we literally could not have the impact DBL has on so many lives and facilities,” Darci said.
For Darci, Tulip has been an incredible colleague and companion. “Tulip has truly changed the work I do,” she said. “She allows me to interact and connect with students in such a natural and easy way.” Every time Tulip curls up beside a student, offers her calm support, or simply wags her tail, she’s creating an educational environment where students can thrive.
