Paws for PTSD

Healing Together: Veterans & Shelter Dogs

The Program:

Paws for PTSD is a pioneering support program helping veterans manage PTSD by training and adopting shelter dogs. In partnership with the Atlanta Humane Society, the program creates healing bonds that transform both lives. Even if graduates of the program do not meet the requirements as a fully trained Service Dog, veterans will complete the program with a loving dog who can provide them with support.

Program Partner:

Why it Matters:

  • For Veterans: A safe space to build trust, reduce isolation, and develop coping skills alongside peers and professionals, and the chance to have a PTSD Service Dog, Emotional Support Dog or loving pet.
  • For Dogs: A second chance at life, meaningful training, and a permanent home.
  • For Communities: Healthier, supported veterans and fewer homeless dogs.

How it Works:

Step 1: Shelter Dog Selection

Dogs with ideal temperaments are identified by Dogs for Better Lives Staff. Dogs who are selected leave the shelter and training begins.

Step 2: Veteran Onboarding

We get to know each person individually and assess whether our program fits their needs.

Step 3: Matching

After 4 weeks, Veterans are paired with dogs based on temperament, lifestyle, and training progress.

Step 4: 6-Month Training

Weekly group sessions plus individual support at the DBL training facility.

Step 5: Graduation

Some dogs earn Service Dog certification; others provide companionship as Emotional Support Animals or loving pets.

Step 6: Ongoing Support

Veterans receive ongoing follow-ups and training support from DBL staff throughout the life of the team.

The Impact on Veterans:

  • Reduces feelings of loneliness & suicide risk
  • Encourages teamwork, confidence & resilience
  • Improves mental and physical health
  • Opens new pathways to careers or volunteering in animal care
  • Creates opportunities for friendships and a supportive community that continues after the program ends.
